The Royal Astronomical Society is seeking a Policy and Outreach Officer to lead a high profile campaign to inspire the next generation of geophysicists and influence national policy and education pathways.
This is a rare opportunity to play a key role in shaping how geophysics is understood, promoted, and developed across the UK, working at the intersection of science, education, and public policy.

About the role
Geophysics plays a critical role in addressing global challenges, yet recruitment into the field remains a concern, particularly at undergraduate level. This role will lead a targeted campaign to increase awareness, engagement, and uptake of geophysics study and careers.
Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, you will work within a small policy team and collaborate widely with stakeholders across education, government, industry, and the scientific community.
You will combine policy insight, public engagement, and partnership working to deliver meaningful, measurable impact.
Key responsibilities
You will take ownership of a national campaign designed to increase interest and participation in geophysics by:
- Leading and delivering a strategic outreach and policy campaign to raise awareness of geophysics careers and study pathways
- Conducting research and analysis into the economic, societal, and career benefits of geophysics
- Producing accessible, evidence based materials for a range of audiences, including schools, students, policymakers, and the public
- Building and managing partnerships with stakeholders across government, education, industry, and learned societies
- Engaging with the RAS Fellowship to draw on expert knowledge and support campaign delivery
- Monitoring impact and contributing to reporting against strategic objectives
About you
We are looking for someone who is passionate about science and its role in society, with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and influence a wide range of audiences.
Essential requirements:
- Degree level qualification in geophysics or a closely related discipline
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages for different audiences
- Good understanding of the UK policy landscape in higher education and or industry related to geophysics
- Experience of, or a clear ability to undertake, research and policy analysis and present findings in an accessible way
- Ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences, including young people and non-specialist groups
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across a range of stakeholders
- Understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion principles
- Eligibility to work in the UK
Desirable experience
- Experience of working with membership organisations, learned societies, or similar bodies
- Experience of campaigning, advocacy, or influencing policy
- Experience in marketing, outreach, or engagement within education or industry
