The winning UK students on their way home

Five UK sixth-formers have returned from a successful International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics with medals and prizes.

Five sixth form students have successfully represented the UK at the 11th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), which took place from the 11th to the 21st November 2017 in Phuket, Thailand, and pitted them against 219 participants from 46 countries. The team won a Silver and three Bronze medals, whilst one of the UK team members was in the mixed-nation team that won the Team Competition and another came runner-up with his team in the same competition.

The UK team consisted of Phoenix Sremcevic (The Cherwell School, Oxford, Silver and 32nd overall), John Hayton (King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys, Bronze), Leran Dai (Shrewsbury School, Bronze and Runner-up in the Team competition), Joshua Brown (Warwick School, Bronze and Best in Team competition) and Selena Yang (St Mary's School, Cambridge). The team was led by Alex Calverley (Royal Grammar School, Guildford) and Sandor Kruk (Oxford Astrophysics), with Robin Hughes (Chairman of the British Physics Olympiad) and Duncan Lorimer (The Cherwell School) acting as observers.
