In 2025 the RAS wrote to Lord Vallance of Balham, the Minister for Science, Innovation and Research, setting out the need for action to protect the European Southern Observatory site in Chile from light pollution from an industrial development proposed for the vicinity. The letter and reply are included here. Eventually (in 2026) the development was cancelled, ending the threat to the Observatory.
