The successful British team in the Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad in India last year received awards at an evening in London.

Both the 2016 British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad team who competed successfully in Bhubaneswar, India last December and the newly selected 2017 Team who are due to compete in Phuket, Thailand in November were present at the Royal Society on Thursday 27th April 2017, with family and teachers to receive prizes and awards.

Professor Chris Lintott from the University of Oxford first presented awards to the 2016 team of Mavis Chan, Thomas Read, Michael Smith and Alan Sun. Thomas Read gained the 10th Gold medal overall in the International Olympiad. Next binocular prizes (sponsored by a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society) and awards were presented to the 2017 team of Leran Dai, John Hayton, Josh Brown, Selena Yang, Phoenix Sremcevic and reserve Ryan Lee. The other 2017 BAAO finalists were also there for photos (Christopher Finn, Rohan Lad, Louis Withers, Sam Gunatillake and Eduardo Gibbons)

The 11th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics will take place from 12th to 21st November in Phuket, Thailand. The team will receive training by email and via a number of residential camps in Oxford and at the Blackett Observatory in Marlborough.
