Rosette Nebula

An artist's impression of the Rosette Nebula.
Royal Astronomical Society

Title: Rosette Nebula

Maker: Kay Leech, textile artist

Techniques used: Jam jar dyed fabric, further colour added using Inktense blocks. Hand embroidery and machine quilting.

Inspiration:

"The original dyeing on the fabric made me think of a nebula and I had started to do some embroidery.  However, it was a UFO - unfinished object.  My daughter, who works in the Physics Department at York University told me about the project.  Immediately  I knew that I wanted to finish the piece.  I looked online at photographs of different nebula and the Rosette Nebula photograph just spoke to me.

I am currently studying for the City and Guilds Patchwork and Quilting Diploma and felt that this added a different challenge to my portfolio. I loved the idea of a communal piece of textile work commemorating the bicentenary of a scientific organisation."
