John R. Hopper is a Research Professor of Tectonics in the Department of Geophysics and Sedimentary Basins at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland and an Adjunct Professor of Geophysics at the Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen. His research is directed towards understanding dynamic processes that shape Earth's surface, crust, and lithosphere, the key components making up tectonic plates. These studies include a combination of both observational work, using geophysical methods, in particular marine seismic and acoustic methods, to understand the structure and properties of the crust and mantle, as well as theoretical work through numerical modelling. With a regional focus on the North Atlantic and Arctic, the interaction of the solid earth with the ocean and cryosphere systems has been a key focus for the last many years.
