Why Do People Work in Space?

Humans have always looked up at the stars, but some go further and spend their working lives studying distant planets, building rockets, and extracting data from satellite images. So apart from human curiosity, what exactly drives people to work in the space sector? In this talk, we'll dive into some of the findings of the 2024 Space Census to find out the key motivations, capabilities, and opportunities that ignite our curiosity and inspire us to reach for the stars.

About our speaker:

Dr Heidi Thiemann is the co-founder and director of the Space Skills Alliance, a think tank and consultancy tracking the space skills gap. Since co-founding SSA in 2019, Heidi has become recognised as a leader in the space skills landscape. Previously, she led the Cornwall Space and Aerospace Technology Training programme, developing the first national HNC/HND curriculum for the space sector and supporting local businesses to identify and fill their skills gaps. Heidi holds a PhD in Astrophysics from the Open University, and a MPhys in Physics with Space Science and Technology from the University of Leicester.
