Statement on RAS_Diversity Twitter account

The RAS 2019 National Astronomy Meeting (NAM 2019) includes lively and well attended sessions on diversity in science. At the conference diversity lunch on Monday 1 July a delegate caused offence in terms of the subject matter and the tone and persistence of their comments.

The session Chair moved the discussion along very effectively, and the incident is being dealt with by the Local Organising Committee under the auspices of the conference Code of Conduct, with the full support of the Society.

In response an RAS employee commented using the Society’s RAS_Diversity Twitter account, condemning the behaviour of the delegate. Regrettably the tweet included unprofessional language in referring to this person.

This is not in accordance with the Society approach to diversity and inclusion. That individual has apologised for the use of this language, and we are dealing with the matter internally.

We reiterate that the RAS welcomes all delegates to NAM 2019, regardless of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital or parental status, age, disability, race, religion or physical appearance.

Update: We are keen to resume our focus on the leading-edge science being presented at NAM2019 and the tweets have now been removed.
