Rosetta Mission
Title: Rosetta Mission
Description: The square shows some details of the European Space Agency's Rosetta Mission to study comet 67P - particularly the spacecraft and the Philae lander
Maker: Helen Usher, PhD student, social media manager for Europlanet
Techniques used: "It is mainly done in cross stitch, with back stitching and special stiches such as eyelets and beading to add accents."
Inspiration: I was inspired by the Rosetta Mission and as a result I am now doing a PhD on Rosetta data. I thought the cartoons used for outreach for the Mission were brilliant and engaging, so I wanted to reflect all these things in my square. I started with mission illustrations provided by Design & Data GmbH/ ESA and worked with cross-stitch designer Eleanor Friston to turn them into a square. I think Eleanor did a great job! It was fun to stitch. I'm thinking of doing one for myself now - to put on the cover of my eventual PhD thesis!"
