In 1994, the Galactic X-ray transient GRS 1915+105 was shown to have super-luminal radio jets (Mirabel and Rodriguez 1994), paving the way for the comparison between X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei. Since that discovery, the field of X-ray binary research has developed dramatically, with many more sources showing evidence for super-luminal jet motion temporal and spectral X-ray monitoring improving our understanding of the connection between mass inflow and jet ejection signatures, and developments of the theoretical understanding of the launching and collimation of outflows. Now, 30 years after the discovery of super-luminal motion, is the perfect time to re-visit GRS 1915+105 and the wider X-ray binary population to discuss the developments over the last few decades.

This RAS specialist discussion meeting will focus on two keep aspects: 1) the observational results of radio jets in GRS 1915+105 and other X-ray binaries over the last 30 years, and what we have learnt from these studies and 2) the theoretical and multi-wavelength studies of X-ray binaries as a class to better understand the launching of the radio jets in these systems. This meeting aims to bring together the observational and theoretical communities from all wavelengths to share insight into X-ray binary jet production and launching.
